Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
New research suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
